Top Women in Wealth 2010

Each year Wealth Management Magazine selects the top 50 women in the wealth management industry. After serving as a Money Market Portfolio Manager and Financial Advisor, I know what women in the financial services industry have to contend with.

It's still very much a man's man's world out there, but women can excel especially in the financial advisory field where it is all about developing a personal rapport with your clients and providing exceptional service.

Although technically she is not a wealth manager, for the first time in US history we have a woman, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi as the Speaker of the House of Representatives and she helps to make the laws that govern the financial services industry. Nancy Pelosi is perhaps the most powerful woman in the US and stands second in line as successor to President Obama.

Another woman who is charting her own path is Mary Schapiro, Chairman, Securities and Exchange Commission. Mary is the first woman to serve as the Chairman of the SEC. An attorney by training, she has also served as the  chairperson and CEO of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority aka FINRA (formerly National Association of Securities Dealers or NASD).

Included in the list below are women like Sallie Krawcheck President, Global Wealth and Investment Management, Bank of America  who have broken through the glass ceiling on their own terms.

Also on the list are entrepreneurs Muriel Siebert, CEO, Muriel Siebert & Co., Inc. a trail-blazer in the wealth management field. Muriel has been described as the first woman of Finance. Muriel was the first woman to own a brokerage firm and hold a seat at the New York Stock ExEchange (NYSE). She established the firm in 1967 when she became the first woman member of the NYSE and transformed it into a discount brokerage house on May 1, 1975, the first day that NYSE members were permitted to negotiate commissions. Muriel Siebert and Co., Inc., is the only woman-owned NYSE brokerage firm with a national presence. Ms. Siebert continues to oversee the firm's day-to-day operations at its seven branches. The firm's municipal affiliate, Siebert Brandford Shank & Co., LLC, is ranked in the top 15 public finance firms in the country.
